From Jedi to Geraniums – Getting to know our Plant expert

This week, as part of his work experience and social media takeover, Sam caught up with our Plant Expert, David, for a fun interview with a difference. Knowing David is both a keen gardener and a huge Star Wars fan, Sam put together a series of questions to discover what happens when these two passions collide!

Q1: If you had to design a plant display representing the light and dark sides of Star Wars, what plants would you use and why?

I would use the Allium ‘Millenium’ and Allium ‘Orbit’ to portray the Death Star due to their striking spherical appearance.

Q2: Which Star Wars planet would have the nicest gardens?

Coruscant or Naboo.

Q3: Which plant would be Yoda’s favourite to have in his garden?

I’d have to say the Unwins’  Spring Onion seeds – they’re the closest thing to growing your own Lightsaber!

Q4: What is the best value-for-money plant to buy today in terms of value and flowering period?

Our Celosia ‘Prince of Wales’ here at Brick Kiln for £5.99, with a flowering period lasting until the end of August.

Q5: What is the prettiest flower in your opinion?

Hedychium coronarium, also known as the Ginger Lily, due to its towering stature and delicate flowers.

Q6: What do you think is the best in-season flower at the minute?

Delphiniums, due to the bold height, colour and vibrancy they add to the garden.

Q7: What do you think is the best in-season tree at the minute?

The beautifully vibrant Albizia julibrissin, with its soft pink flowers.

Q8: If a flower could be a Star Wars character, who would it be?

I would say Dahlia ‘Verrone’s Obsidian’ represents a sinister, Darth Vader-esque character with its striking dark appearance.

Q9: What is your best method for managing pests and diseases without relying completely on harsh chemicals?

A method I often use is companion planting, where one plant is grown alongside another to help deter pests. For example, planting marigolds near tomatoes can help repel insects such as whitefly thanks to their strong scent.

Q10: Last but not least, what is your favourite Star Wars film?

I would say Rogue One, with Andor watched beforehand in the Star Wars timeline.
