Planting Spring-Flowering bulbs in Autumn might seem a little early, but it’s the key to a vibrant, colourful garden when the warmer months arrive. Autumn planting allows bulbs to establish strong roots before the cold weather sets in. This period of dormancy under the soil helps them develop energy reserves, so that when Spring arrives, they burst into life as healthy spectacular flowers.

At Brick Kiln Garden Centre, we love helping customers choose the right bulbs for a stunning Spring display. Here’s a look at some of our favourites:

  • Tulips

Tulips are perhaps the most iconic Spring bulb, with their elegant stems and a rainbow of colours ranging from soft pastels to bold reds and purples. Perfect for beds, borders, or containers, Tulips can be planted in groups for maximum impact. With so many varieties available, you can create a display to suit any style of garden.

  • Iris

Spring Irises are admired for their striking colour combinations, from deep blues to rich purples and yellows. They make a wonderful feature in borders and mixed plantings, adding both vibrancy and texture to the garden.

  • Hyacinth

Famous for their heady fragrance, Hyacinths are a treat for the senses. Their dense flower spikes come in shades of pink, blue, white, and purple, making them wonderful for containers near doors or windows where you can enjoy their scent.

  • Daffodil

Cheerful and bright, Daffodils are a true symbol of Spring. Their golden trumpets stand tall and resilient, bringing joy to gardens large and small. Plant them in drifts for a natural look or mix with other bulbs for a longer flowering season.

  • Crocus

Among the earliest bloomers, Crocuses often push through snow to reveal their jewel-like flowers. They’re ideal for lawns, rockeries, or pots, where their purple, yellow, and white blooms signal that spring has truly arrived.

  • Snowdrop

Few sights are more uplifting than the first Snowdrops of the year. Their delicate white bells appear in late Winter, often before anything else has bloomed, offering a gentle promise that Spring is on its way.

  • Narcissus

Closely related to Daffodils, Narcissus varieties bring freshness and light to Spring gardens. With their classic trumpet shapes and gentle colour tones, they add charm and variety to bulb displays, complementing other early bloomers beautifully.

  • Winter Aconite

Bright and cheerful, winter aconites bring splashes of golden yellow to shady spots. These small but resilient bulbs are perfect for naturalising beneath trees or at the edges of paths.

  • Allium

Rising later in the season, Alliums are show-stoppers with their globe-like flower heads in shades of purple, white, and pink. Their architectural form adds drama and height to borders, and their seed heads look attractive even after flowering.

Planting Tips
  • Most Spring-flowering bulbs are planted in autumn for best results.
  • Choose a sunny, well-drained spot.
  • Plant bulbs at a depth roughly three times their size.
  • For a natural look, scatter bulbs by hand and plant where they land.
