If you have ever grown your own Tomatoes, you would know that those pesky pests are troublesome. There are companion plants that could help repel these pests and allow your tomato plants to flourish Spring into Summer. Here are a few that will help your crops grow and thrive!
Garlic: Insects and pests are averse to garlic, making it an ideal natural pest deterrent for your Tomato plants. Its presence effectively wards off Slugs, Caterpillars, Flies, and Aphids.
Basil: This aromatic herb can be an excellent addition to help grow your Tomatoes. This herb has been scientifically proven to repel garden pests such as Aphids, Mites, Flies, and Hornworms. Not to forget it enriches the taste of the fruit, and deters Hornworms, Thrips & Whiteflies.
Sage: This herb attracts beneficial Butterflies and Ladybirds that aid in pollinating your Tomato plants to help produce a good yield, as well as repelling Flea Beetles and Spider Mites.

Marigolds
These cheerful and brightly flowered annuals are an all-time favourite for borders and pots as well as being a real secret weapon in the garden! They can help repel insects such as Aphids, Whiteflies, Tomato Hornworms, Thrips and many more.
Tip: Marigolds will finish during the first frosts of Autumn so, try saving seeds from them beforehand to propagate new plants the following Spring.

Nasturtiums
These annuals are perfect for pest control and very easy to take care of as they thrive with a minimum of care and often seem to prefer neglect! Unlike the other plants in this blog, Nasturtiums attract Aphids and can be used to our benefit. If you have an Aphid problem, plant this annual away from your Tomato plants and this will help keep these pests away from your crop.

To thrive, Tomato plants need plenty of space for their extensive root systems. When planting, choose a generously sized pot, but avoid black containers since they can become too hot and stunt the plant’s growth. Once your Tomato plant is in the garden, ensure it’s positioned to get plenty of sunlight each day. Don’t overlook the importance of using a dedicated Tomato fertiliser, as it can greatly influence the yield and quality of your crops.
Tip: Pinch out the side shoots that appear between the main stems to help concentrate growth on fruit production.
